About 20 years ago we tried to develop drum brakes for BMX bikes by Sturmey Archer, then from England. At that time Thomas Sturmey visited England to start this project. These are similar in dosage to the U-brakes. The trick was to design the brake arms so that they would not get in the way.
Sturmey was then acquired by SunRace in Taiwan, and when the hub was ready for production, the 9-tooth cassette hub was launched, which unfortunately did not fit with the drum brake idea. Unfortunately, this product never made it to market, but it was a great project.
