What are the types of BMX bottom bracket?
There are several types of BMX bottom brackets, which differ mainly in terms of their structure and compatibility. Here are the main types of BMX bottom brackets:
- Mid Bottom Bracket (Mid BB): Mid bottom brackets are the most commonly used bottom brackets in the BMX world. They have a centered position in the bottom bracket shell of the frame. Mid bottom brackets are known for their durability and ability to handle the stresses of street riding and park riding. They are typically available with 19mm or 22mm axle diameters.
- Spanish bottom bracket (Spanish BB): Spanish bottom brackets have a smaller diameter than mid-bottom brackets and are placed in the center of the bottom bracket shell. They are often found in BMX bikes with smaller frames or in BMX bikes for younger riders. Spanish bottom brackets usually use a 19mm axle.
- Euro Bottom Bracket (Euro BB): Euro bottom brackets are an older bottom bracket style used in some BMX bikes, especially racing BMX bikes. They have a larger diameter than Mid or Spanish bottom brackets and are positioned in the center of the bottom bracket shell. Euro bottom brackets are often equipped with a 19 mm axle.
- External Bottom Bracket (External BB): External bottom brackets are a less common option in BMX, but are found in some BMX bikes. They have a housing outside the frame and are usually available with 24mm axle diameter. External bottom brackets can offer better stiffness and efficiency, but are more susceptible to dirt and contamination.
Choosing the right bottom bracket for your BMX bike depends on the type of frame you have and your riding style. Mid bottom brackets are a good all-around option and are preferred by most BMX riders. However, always note the compatibility of your frame and crankset to ensure the bottom bracket will fit. If you are unsure, it is recommended that you contact a BMX bike dealer or KHE Service to make the best choice.
