How do I properly care for my BMX hub?
Proper care of your BMX hub is important to ensure it runs smoothly and stays durable. Here are some steps to properly care for your BMX hub:
Remember that proper care of your BMX hub will not only improve performance, but can also extend the life of your equipment. If you are unsure or need help, contact our KHE service representative and they will be able to help you maintain and repair your hub.
1. Cleaning:
- Start by cleaning your hub. Use a brush or rag to remove dirt, dust and debris from the surface of the hub. Make sure the hub is dry before proceeding to the next step.
- Check the hub bearings for wear or damage. If the bearings are damaged or feel loose, they should be replaced. Bearings can often be removed and replaced using special BMX tools.
- The bearings of your hub should be lubricated regularly to ensure smooth rolling. Use a good quality bearing grease or bearing oil. Carefully remove the seals or covers from the bearings, add lubricant and replace the covers. Wipe off excess lubricant.
- Make sure the hub axle and all fasteners (e.g., nuts, bolts) are tight and secure. A loose hub can cause problems when riding.
- If you have a rear hub with a freewheel, check the freewheel mechanism for wear or damage. Clean and lubricate the freewheel as needed.
- If your rear hub has a brake disc or brake shoe attachments, check the condition of these parts. Make sure the brakes are working properly and the brake surfaces are not worn.
- Perform regular inspections, especially after intense riding or if you notice any suspicious noises or vibrations while riding. If you notice problems, fix them as soon as possible to prevent major damage.
- Create a maintenance schedule for your hub to ensure that you regularly perform the necessary maintenance. The exact frequency will depend on your riding style and the conditions you ride in, but once per season is often a good guideline
