How do I replace BMX cranksets and what tools are needed?
Replacing BMX cranksets requires some basic knowledge of bicycle mechanics and the right tools. Here's a guide on how to replace BMX cranksets:
Tools needed:
- Allen wrench: to loosen the crank arm bolts, you'll need an Allen wrench that matches the size of the bolts. Crank puller: A crank puller is needed to remove the old crank arms from the bottom bracket axle.
- Wrench or special bottom bracket tool: Depending on the type of bottom bracket you have, you may need a wrench or special tool to remove the bottom bracket.
- Torque wrench: A torque wrench is useful to tighten the crank arm bolts to the correct torque to prevent damage.
Steps to replace BMX cranksets:
- Preparation: make sure your BMX bike is securely on a bike stand or upside down. Remove the front wheel to gain better access.
- Removing the pedals: Use a wrench to remove the pedals from the crank arms. The left pedal has a left-hand thread, so you will need to loosen it clockwise. The right pedal has a right-hand thread, so loosen it counterclockwise.
- Removing the crank arms: Use the crank puller to remove the old crank arms from the bottom bracket axle. Insert the crank puller into the threads of the crank and turn it clockwise to loosen the crank. Repeat this step for both crank arms.
- Bottom Bracket Removal: Depending on the type of bottom bracket you have, you may need to remove the bottom bracket. Use the appropriate wrench or special tool.
- Installing the new crank arms: Place the new crank arms on the bottom bracket axle and tighten them with the torque wrench to the torque recommended by the manufacturer. Make sure the crank arms are tightened evenly.
- Attaching the pedals: Screw the pedals back onto the crank arms. Remember that the left pedal has a left-hand thread and is tightened counterclockwise, while the right pedal has a right-hand thread and is tightened clockwise.
- Inspection: Check the entire assembly to make sure everything is secure and tight. Check the pedals, crank arms and bottom bracket.
- Test Ride: Take a short test ride to make sure everything is working properly and nothing is coming loose.
If you are unsure or inexperienced in bicycle repair, we strongly recommend having an experienced bicycle mechanic perform BMX crankset assembly, as improper assembly can result in damage or injury.
